Thirty-seven

Birthdays have always been such a thrill for me. My heart breaks for the girls I see stressing out over turning 25, 30 or 35. I wanted to turn 30 for years and am already looking forward to 40. I've been lucky to surround myself with amazing women of all ages and I think their perspective on life has given me a pretty great outlook.

IMDB tells me I also have some pretty good company (and that photoshop is a godsend):

This is what thirty-seven looks like. {images via IMDB}

So pop the bubbly and crank up the music because I'm just getting started.

Midweek Morsel - Spicy Basil Chicken

Yet another midweek morsel courtesy of Cooking Light. I never realized how much I use this resource over all others when it comes to a healthy and quick meal. Grab a glass of wine while getting the ingredients together because that's the hardest part of this dish. A few sips and dinner will be done before you know it. Unwind and enjoy.

Spicy Basil Chicken (adapted from Cooking Light)

You'll Need:
2 teaspoons olive or sesame oil
1/4 cup minced shallots
3 garlic cloves, sliced
4 oz boneless chicken thighs, cut into 1 inch pieces
1 tablespoon fish sauce
2 teaspoons sugar
2 teaspoons soy sauce
2 teaspoons chile paste*
1 teaspoon water
1/2 teaspoon cornstarch
1/3 cup sliced basil leaves
*spiciness of this dish will depend on what kind of chile paste you use

To Make:
Heat a large nonstick skillet over med-high heat. Add oil to pan. Add shallots and garlic, cooking 30 seconds or so. Add chicken to pan. Cook 10-12 mins or until cooked through. In the meantime, combine fish sauce and next 5 ingredients (through cornstarch) in a small bowl, stirring with a whisk. Add fish sauce mixture to pan and cook for 1 minute or until sauce thickens and coats chicken. Remove from heat and stir in basil.
Serve with rice and sautéed or steamed vegetables.

Broadway In CLE

post-launch reception

The suspense is over, the confetti has fallen and the 2013-14 PlayhouseSquare KeyBank Broadway Series has been announced! Wine, cocktails and nibbles were had in a pre and post announcement celebration for donors on Monday night. I've said it before and I'll say it again: they sure do know how to throw a party and treat the numerous Donors, Partners and Friends of the theatre.

Senior Vice President of Theatre Operations, Gina Vernaci announced the 7 show lineup only after being welcomed to the stage by a marching band. If you've ever had the pleasure to hear her speak about our theatre, you know this is well deserved. Her passion and enthusiasm for not only PlayhouseSquare, but our city and culture is infectious and heartwarming.

Let's get to it, shall we?

Sleeping Beauty October 1-13, 2013

"New Adventures’ 25th birthday culminates with the world premiere of Matthew Bourne’s latest re-imagining of a ballet classic.  Sleeping Beauty sees Bourne return to the music of Tchaikovsky to complete the trio of ballet masterworks that started with Nutcracker! and the international smash hit, Swan Lake.  Our story begins in 1890 at the christening of Princess Aurora, a time when fairies and vampires fed the gothic imagination, before moving forward in time to the modern day."

Once November 12-24, 2013

"Winner of eight 2012 Tony Awards including Best Musical and winner of the 2013 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, ONCE is a truly original Broadway experience. Featuring an impressive ensemble of actor/musicians who play their own instruments onstage, ONCE tells the enchanting tale of a Dublin street musician who's about to give up on his dream when a beautiful young woman takes a sudden interest in his haunting love songs. As the chemistry between them grows, his music soars to powerful new heights... but their unlikely connection turns out to be deeper and more complex than your everyday romance. Emotionally captivating and theatrically breathtaking, ONCE draws you in from the very first note and never lets go. It's an unforgettable story about going for your dreams... not living in fear... and the power of music to connect all of us."

Porgy and Bess February 4-16, 2014

"Praised by the New Yorker as, “A great achievement!” and hailed by the Associated Press as, “a Gorgeous version of the Gershwin masterpiece,” the classic story of The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess is set in Charleston’s fabled Catfish Row, where the beautiful Bess struggles to break free from her scandalous past, and the only one who can rescue her is the
courageous Porgy. Threatened by her formidable former lover Crown, and the seductive enticements of the colorful troublemaker Sporting Life, Porgy and Bess’ relationship evolves into a deep romance that triumphs as one of theater’s most exhilarating love stories."

The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber March4-16, 2014

"Since bursting onto the Broadway scene some thirty years ago, Tony, Grammy and Academy-Award-winning composer Andrew Lloyd Webber has brought to the stage a host of musical blockbusters that have taken the theatre world by storm. Now, the biggest hits from these inspirational and diverse works have been fashioned into a theatrical evening of music that is, like the songs themselves, unforgettable.  Included in The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber are the great songs and musicals excerpts from The Phantom of the Opera, CATS, Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar, Starlight Express, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Song and Dance, Requiem, Aspects of Love, Sunset Boulevard, Whistle Down The Wind and, for the first time in the U.S., Love Never Dies."

Jersey Boys May 6-18, 2014

"The show that made critics and
audiences cheer is “Working Its Way Back” to Cleveland where it broke the worldwide box office record for any production of JERSEY BOYS.
JERSEY BOYS, is the Tony®, Grammy® and Olivier Award-winning Best Musical about Rock and Roll Hall of Famers The Four Seasons: Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi. This is the story of how four blue-collar kids became one of the greatest successes in pop music history. They wrote their own songs, invented their own sounds and sold 175 million records worldwide – all before they were 30!  JERSEY BOYS features their hit songs
“Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Rag Doll,” “Oh What a Night” and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.” “IT WILL RUN FOR CENTURIES!” proclaims Time Magazine."

Flashdance April 1-13, 2014

"Celebrating its 30th Anniversary, the pop culture phenomenon of FLASHDANCE is now live on stage. With electrifying dance at its core, FLASHDANCE-THE MUSICAL tells the inspiring and unforgettable story of Alex Owens, a Pittsburgh steel mill welder by day and a bar dancer by night with dreams of one day becoming a professional performer. When romance with her steel mill boss threatens to complicate her ambitions, Alex learns the meaning of love and its power to fuel the pursuit of her dream.
FLASHDANCE-THE MUSICAL features a score that includes the biggest hit songs from the movie, including the Academy Award-winning title song "Flashdance - What a Feeling," "Maniac," "Gloria," "Manhunt," and "I Love Rock & Roll." In addition to these hits, 16 brand new songs have been written for the musical with music by Robbie Roth and lyrics by Robert Cary and Robbie Roth."

Wicked December 4-January 5, 2014

"Long before that girl from Kansas arrives in Munchkinland, two girls meet in the land of Oz. One – born with emerald green skin – is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. How these two grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good makes for “the most complete – and completely satisfying – new musical in a long time” (USA Today).

Back by “Popular” demand.  Variety calls WICKED “a cultural phenomenon,” and every time it plays Cleveland it breaks records and sells out in record time.  Winner of 35 major awards, including a Grammy and three Tony Awards, WICKED is “Broadway’s biggest blockbuster” (The New York Times)."

Not only were we wined, dined and entertained but totally taken aback with a surprise performance by the exquisite Anne Brummel who plays Elphaba in the 2nd North American tour of Wicked.

Collabaholic - Kate Young For Target

The last few Target collabs have left me a little underwhelmed. Whether it's the quality, fit or simply design, I haven't been counting down to the release date. Leave it to Kate Young to change all that.  I was pleasantly surprised when I laid eyes on her inspiration sketches, then left wanting more when the first few campaign images hit the press. My First Jump Back Ball

{Don't forget to enter to win tickets to the Annual Launch Party for the 2013-14 KeyBank Broadway Series at PlayhouseSquare. Details here.}

My first Jump Back Ball was supposed to be in February 2006. Friends had an extra ticket that I excitedly accepted. The theme was Frolic on 42nd - A Broadway Blitz. I never made it. I have a habit of getting sick on special occasions with expensive tickets. (Like the huge Millennium NYE party we bought non-refundable tickets to and had friends fly in from Texas for.) ...and Jump Back Ball. Walking pneumonia prevented me from the ball and every year after that I was out of town on JBB weekend for work.

Fast forward eight years and I finally made it to the ball!

clockwise - the boys / the scene / my very own Daddy Warbucks / mega bling / pre-gala cocktails at Pier W

Nadine looking gorg in cobalt / fun-sized lobby decor / my beautiful girls
wicked awesome social committee co-chairs / stiltwalker in a tutu!

pretty sure Jen is handing out some serious smack talk to Alicia / dancefloor antics
first of many inappropriate twister matches / ending the evening at the Union Club

I'm not a stranger to black-tie events so I don't have any crazy tips for JBB you probably aren't already aware of. My usual stands true: wear shoes you can dance in, be sure not to show any side boob and drink water in between cocktails. I would recommend grabbing a bite to eat beforehand. Primarily because you'll be so excited that you'll forget to eat. We headed to Pier W first and I was glad we did because I was so distracted chatting and mingling that I never got around to eating much of the dinner provided. Truth be told, I'm not that good at standing and eating in a party dress anyway. But I did nosh on some of the tasty nibbles throughout the latter part of the evening. (Hot pretzels, candy, desserts and the like.)

The main difference between JBB and all the other fundraisers out there? The people. Everyone is there. The people watching is simply incredible and it's held in the most glamorous and magical place in all of Cleveland. And it benefits PlayhouseSquare!

Be sure to get your tickets in advance for next year. The theme is usually announced in August and pre-sale tickets go on sale in November and if this year was any indication they will sell out in record speed.

Discounts can be had for Partners and Donors of PlayhouseSquare. Find more about becoming a member here.

::Disclosure - I was asked to be an official Jump Back Ball blogger and received one complimentary ticket. I am also a member of Partners and on the Social Committee. All musings and antics are my own::
